The government cannot be trusted to respect Americans’ rights

For the past 35 years, The Rutherford Institute has been warning the American people that all is not what it seems when it comes to the U.S. government.

Just consider some of the ways in which the government has double-crossed the citizenry over the years:

• In exchange for free education for America’s young people, the government has turned the public schools into indoctrination centers breeding compliant, obedient citizens who reflect the government’s values and know very little about their nation’s history or their rights.
   
• In exchange for a dubious guarantee of safety, local police have been militarized and trained in battlefield tactics, communities and communications have been subjected to round-the-clock surveillance, and you—the citizenry—are being treated as suspects and enemy combatants.

• In exchange for a promise to root out domestic extremism and terrorism, the government now has the power to label anyone who disagrees with its policies as an extremist/terrorist and subject them to indefinite detentions.

Are you starting to get the picture?

The government cannot be trusted to respect our rights.

Frankly, there is no room for trust in the relationship between the citizenry and the government. That’s why we have the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

As Thomas Jefferson warned, “In questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution.”

That’s why The Rutherford Institute continues to sound the alarm whenever the government oversteps, overreaches and exceeds its authority. It’s why we work so hard to equip Americans with the constitutional resources they need to stand up for their rights. And it’s why we continue to stand in defense of Americans whose rights have been violated.
